Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco - KM 82 - Wayllabamba (3400m - 3000m)
Morning Transfer by bus from your Hotel in Cusco to Km82 the trailhead on the Urubamba River.
Hike along the river beneath the impressive snowcapped Nevado Veronica through cactus gardens and corn fields to Llactapata inca site, then continue up through the valley of Pachachaca to camp nearby the Wayllabamba Village (3000mosl).
Lunch and Dinner.
Terrain: 1½ hours along fairly flat terrain following the River Urubamba into the valley of the Cusichaca River. Then ½ hour slowly ascending and a final short sharp uphill stretch to a plateau for lunch. After lunch descend into a valley where it is again fairly flat for 1¼ - 1½ hours before a final 15 minutes - ½ hour ascent to camp.
Day 2: Wayllabamba - Pacaymayo (3000m - 3600m)
We climb steeply up through fields and forest, then emerge above the tree line and reach the first Pass at Warmiwañusca(4200m). The highest point of the trail.
Enjoy the magnificent views of the range of snow peaks on one side and the Inca sites on the other side.
Descend to our camping site in the valley bottom at Paccamayo (3,600m)
Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Terrain: Ascend for first ½ hour till check post. Further 1½ - 2 hours through forest and up steps getting steeper to lunch spot (3850m). Final 1½ - 2 hours ascent to Dead Woman´s Pass (4200m). From there 1 - 2 hours steep descent with many steps to camp at 3600m.
Day 3: Pacaymayo - Wiñayhuayna (3600m - 2600m)
We cross the second pass at Runkuracay (3800m) and continue to a fine Inca highway down to the exquisite ridge-top archaelogical site of Sayacmarca. Further on, we pass through a tunnel amid luxuriant cloud forest vegetation, we pass Phuyupatamarca a superb overlooking the Urubamba river far below, the Royal Highway descends steeply through orchid-rich cloud forest to one of the most beautiful Inca ruins of Wiñayhuayna we set our camping nearby.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Terrain: 1½ hour steep ascent to begin with followed by 1½ hour downhill then gentle ascent to lunch. 1 – 1½ hours, starting with a steep ascent then more gradual uphill with some flat terrain. From Phuyu Pata Marca 1 – 1½ hours down steep steps to pylon. 1 – 1½ hours downhill track to campsite.
Day 4: Wiñayhuayna - Machupicchu (2600m - 2400m)
Early in the morning we start the final part of the trail on the back of Machupicchu mountain which is stunningly beautiful to Inti Punko the Sun gate to see the Sun rise and how it shines Machupicchu is amazing.
Breakfast.
Before 8 am we reach the amazing Lost City of the Incas, store the backpacks and enter to Machupicchu for a 3 hour guided tour, and then you explore Machupicchu by yourself and take more pictures.You can stay as long as you want up on the site. They close Machupicchuby at 4pm.
You will have on hand the bus ticket down to Aguas Calientes the train station. Whenever you decide take the bus down (20 minutes)
OPTIONAL: You can go to hot spring pools to relax before the train.
Afternoon Train departure from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaitambo(2 hour train ride) and then bus (1hour 30minutes bus ride) to Cusco.
Terrain: 1 - 1½ hours - mixture of uphill and level terrain to a series of 50 very steep steps. 15 – 20 minute mild ascent to Intipunku. 45 minutes descent to Machu Picchu.
